Reflections from HYROX Glasgow Pro Doubles

Lessons from the HYROX Journey

This past weekend, I competed in the HYROX Glasgow Pro Doubles with my sister Joanna, and it was an experience that pushed me physically, mentally, and emotionally. I want to share my reflections, not just for myself but to be of service to anyone who might be on their own journey of growth, resilience, and self-discovery.

1. Progress Isn’t Always Linear

I went into my training with the expectation that I would sail through it, but life had other plans. Injuries—a torn Achilles and a hurt shoulder—set me back by about six weeks. On top of that the universe threw me a few personal curveballs to navigate my way through (joyful).  It was frustrating, and at times, I questioned if I would even make it to race day. But what I was reminded of was that setbacks don’t define us—our ability to adapt and keep going does. Whatever stage you’re at, trust the process - you are stronger than you may realise.

2. The Comparison Trap Steals Joy

Even though I know that comparison is the thief of joy, I still found myself doing it. I was measuring myself against women 10, 15, even 20 years younger, against male coaches, and against my own unrealistic expectations. But I was comparing apples to pears—an unfair, unwinnable game.

Lesson? Remember to check in when comparison creeps in. Our journey is ours alone, and the only person we need to be better than is the person we were yesterday.

3. The Four Key Pillars of Performance

A solid training plan is crucial, but it’s only one piece of the puzzle. The other three pillars are just as important:

Resting well – Recovery and sleep is essential, not optional.

Thinking well – Your mindset dictates your success.

Fuelling well – Balanced nutrition, hydration and Dream Magic Superfood Powders every single day helped me stay strong.

When we prioritise these, age becomes irrelevant. I turned 50 on March 7th, and instead of seeing it as a limitation, I see it as proof that we can achieve anything at any stage of life—as long as we take care of yourself.

4. You Can Do It All—But Not All At Once

Big goals require sacrifice. During my HYROX training:

My social life took a backseat – Alcohol? Almost none. Nights out? Very few.

My business shifted to ‘maintenance mode’ – No new launches, just keeping things steady.

When we are pursuing a big challenge, it’s important to understand that we can juggle a lot, but we can’t juggle everything at once. And that’s okay.

5. The Power of Support & Reflection

We are not an island. Having the right team around us—training partners, family, friends, physio—makes all the difference. And if you’re someone who likes to do it all alone (guilty!), sometimes you have to swallow your pride and ask for help.

And finally—celebrate yourself.

After the race on Saturday, I initially focused on what I could have done better, but after reflecting, I reminded myself: I DID IT. I completed something incredible. And that’s worth celebrating.

Final Thought

Wherever you are in life, if you commit to looking after yourself—training well, thinking well, eating well, and resting well—you can be unstoppable. Age is just a number. Comparison is a trap. Your potential is limitless.

Let’s keep growing, together.
